There often seems to be some confusion about the differences between RVs, Motorhomes, Campervans and Caravans. The team at Aussie Leisure Loans thought we’d give you a bit of a run down as to where these different vehicles fall in the broad spectrum of Leisure Vehicles.
What is an RV?
Without wasting any time we can take RVs out of this comparison.
RV stands for Recreational Vehicle, which pretty much covers all motorised living/camping vehicles. Basically if you can live in it as well as drive it, you’re in an RV of some description. This includes Motorhomes and Campervans.
What is a Motorhome?
A Motorhome is a large vehicle about the size of a small truck, which includes bedding and cooking facilities, along with many other home style comforts in compact forms. They’re built on a long wheelbase yet most can be driven in Australia on a regular open licence.
The benefit of holidaying in a Motorhome is the lack of set up and pack down effort required before moving on or settling down for the night. Because everything is part of the one vehicle once you stop, you can turn in for the night, and once you’re ready to go, all you have to do is start the engine and drive on.
Motorhomes are popular for long road trips, family holidays and generally any travellers not wanting to bother with a hitch.
What is a Campervan?
Also a form of RV, campervans are vans that have been modified and custom fitted to function as a small motorhome.
Though smaller than other recreational vehicles, campervans can still include bedding, small cooktops and even bathroom facilities.
Their compact form is more manoeuvrable than full size motorhomes, saves on fuel and as such is popular for younger travellers, backpackers, and those more concerned with where they’re going than where they sleep.
What is a Caravan?
A Caravan, also known as a mobile home, is not an RV since it is an unpowered trailer that needs a powered vehicle in order to move from one place to another.
Though unpowered, Caravans can be plugged in to power outlets, have their own battery pack or even a small generator in order to power things like lights, fridges and even some kitchen appliances. They’ll also include basic bedding, seating, bench space, and sometimes even a toilet and shower.
Because of their limited mobility, caravans are usually used for extended camping or holiday trips, or as a permanent holiday home.
